Biography

35mm photo of Sofia Brightwell in a tropical forest

The first decade of my life I spent in the lush, rich and abundant landscape of the southeast of Brazil, on a small island called Florianópolis. At the age of 9, my family and I moved to England, a place that felt so utterly different and strange to my younger self.

In the years that followed, I began to find solace in the silent words and memories of the kitchen. I began collecting recipes, recalling and writing stories of times and people gone, drawing landscapes of not only the land I missed, but the landscapes of taste, smell and touch.

My areas of interest lie in the intersections between food, art and cultural identity. Through the tools I have gained from the world of art and design, I have found ways of communicating themes that are of importance to me such as migrant identity, food heritage, loss and home.

It´s through the union of the art studio and the kitchen that I find solace for my homesick heart.
